Russia’s Sechenov University completes trials of the world’s first COVID-19 vaccine this was the news that was out the day before yesterday. But, before that, the Russian university has submitted the details to the world health organization. But, it seems that they are not satisfied with the result. On July 7th the WHO made a statement that. Usually, clinical trials on human beings should undergo in 3 phases. And for the human trails, they need to test the vaccine on at least 1000 volunteers. But, this was not done in the case of the Russian vaccine. According to the university of Sechenov, the researchers have tested only 40 volunteers and concluded it as a successful vaccine. According to WHO, phase 2 with 100 volunteers and phase 3 with 1000 volunteers should be done to know about the potential of the vaccine.
The WHO has also mentioned that till now out of 21 potential vaccine developers only two have reached the advanced stage: SINOVAC from China and the Oxford University vaccine. They stated that the Russian vaccine has only completed Phase-1 of the human trials. The Russian vaccine’s human trials may be successful but it should not be declared safe for human use until it is tested up to the 3rd phase of human trials.
The WHO asked the Russian government to do a proper study and submit the scientific results to them for getting the vaccine into the market.
