Along with the Corona Virus, another Virus called “HANTA” is creating a panic situation in the world as a man from China lost his life.
Context:
A man in Yunnan Province died on the 24th of March while traveling on a bus to Shandong Province in China. Doctors found out that he was infected by “HANTAVIRUS”. Also, the 32 other passengers on the bus were also tested and their results are awaited.
What is “Hantavirus”?
According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), hantaviruses are a family of viruses that are spread mainly by rodents and can cause varied diseases in people. It can cause Hantavirus pulmonary syndrome (HPS) and hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome (HFRS). It is not an airborne disease but will be infected by Rats, touching urine of the infected person, Rodents(mammal including Rats, squirrels, mice, hamsters, porcupines, and their relatives).
But, it’s not a new virus. It first comes into existence in 1978 near the Hantan river in South Korea. Any man, woman, or child who is around mice or rats that carry harmful hantaviruses can get HPS. Its fatality rate is 38%.
Is There a Cure For Hantavirus?
There is no specific cure or treatment for Hantavirus. As it is a respiratory-related syndrome, the treatment is the same as all the other respiratory treatments like giving artificial oxygen and using the medicine that will clean the lungs. As Coronavirus, the Hantavirus also need precautions like staying away from Rodents, keeping your premises clean.
Should Indians worry?
As of now nothing to worry as the International borders are already close. And for the virus to spread, we need to get into contact with the urine of the infected person that does not happen usually. So, it’s not a situation to worry as of now. So, let us concentrate on our 21-day lockdown and get out of the existing Coronavirus.
