Interview Questions & Sample Answers

1. Tell me about yourself and your career break.

Answer:

I completed my B.E. in Mechanical Engineering and worked in [previous company name] for [X] years as a design engineer. I gained experience in using CAD tools like Creo and worked on [brief project or task]. I took a break from my career to focus on personal responsibilities, including [childcare/family health/relocation/etc.]. Now, I’m excited to return to the engineering field through this opportunity. I’ve kept myself updated by taking online courses and practicing CAD tools at home.

2. Why are you interested in the Volvo ExcelHER program?

Answer:

Volvo’s ExcelHER program is a perfect way for me to restart my career with guidance and mentoring. I like that Volvo supports women returning to work, and I believe I can learn a lot here. I’m especially interested in the CSETA team because it works on real vehicle systems like chassis and transport adaptation, which are areas I’ve always wanted to explore more deeply.

3. What is CAD and how have you used it?

Answer:

CAD stands for Computer-Aided Design. It is software used to create, modify, and analyze designs. In my past work, I used CAD tools like Creo to create 3D models of mechanical parts, make assemblies, and create detailed drawings for manufacturing. I’ve designed brackets, enclosures, and sheet metal parts and worked on improving them based on test results or customer feedback.

4. What is the role of chassis structure in a truck?

Answer:

The chassis is the main frame of a truck. It holds the engine, transmission, axles, suspension, and body. A strong chassis is important for safety, performance, and load-carrying ability. In design, we must make sure the chassis is strong but not too heavy, and that it fits all parts and accessories. Good design improves fuel efficiency and driving comfort.

5. What do you know about Creo?

Answer:

Creo is a CAD software used to design mechanical parts and systems. I’ve used it to:

Creo helps in reducing design errors and improves collaboration with other teams like manufacturing or testing.

6. How do you handle design changes or errors in CAD models?

Answer:

If a change is needed, I first understand the reason—like a test failure or customer request. Then, I check how it affects other parts in the system. In CAD, I carefully update the model and check assemblies. I update the drawings and send them for review. I always keep a backup of the original version and follow the release process to avoid confusion.

 7. Tell us about a project where you used your mechanical design skills.

Answer:

In my last role, I worked on designing a mounting bracket for a small motor. I created the 3D model using Creo and added all details needed for manufacturing. I worked with the testing team to ensure the bracket handled vibration and heat. When we found a stress point during testing, I made design changes to strengthen that area. This project taught me how to balance design, cost, and performance.

8. How do you manage your tasks and time when handling multiple responsibilities?

Answer:

I use simple methods like to-do lists and calendar reminders to plan my day. I prioritize urgent tasks and break bigger tasks into smaller steps. If something takes more time than expected, I communicate with the team early to avoid delays. I believe staying organized and calm helps finish work on time without stress.

9. What are your strengths that can help in this role?

Answer:

I have good knowledge of mechanical systems and hands-on experience with CAD tools like Creo. I’m a quick learner and ready to upskill wherever needed. I’m also good at communication and teamwork. Most importantly, I’m motivated and committed to restarting my career with full energy and dedication.

10. How do you feel about working with a cross-functional team?

Answer:

I believe working with people from different teams—like testing, manufacturing, and project management—helps improve the design. I’ve experienced this during previous projects where feedback from other teams helped make better decisions. It’s a great way to learn and ensure that our design works well in the real world.

11. Are you familiar with quality tools in engineering?

Answer:

Yes, I have some understanding of tools like DFMEA (Design Failure Mode and Effect Analysis), which helps find possible failures in a design early. I also know about GD&T (Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing), which ensures accurate manufacturing. I am open to learning more about quality tools used at Volvo.

12. What do you know about Volvo Group and its work in transport?

Answer:

Volvo is a global leader in making trucks, buses, and construction equipment. The company focuses on safety, sustainability, and innovation. I admire how Volvo is working on next-generation transport solutions like electric trucks and reducing emissions. It’s exciting to be part of a company that thinks about the future.

13. What challenges do you expect in returning to work, and how will you handle them?

Answer:

The main challenge is catching up with new tools and technologies. But I’ve already started updating myself with online learning. I also believe the mentoring support offered in ExcelHER will help me adjust smoothly. I’m confident that with dedication and teamwork, I can overcome any challenge.
