Junior Java Developer – Interview Questions and Answers

1. What is Java and why do we use it?

Answer:
Java is a programming language that is used to build software applications. It is popular because it is simple to learn, works on all platforms (Windows, Linux, Mac), and is very secure. Java is used in many areas like mobile apps, web applications, and enterprise software. One big benefit is that you can write code once and run it anywhere (this is called “Write Once, Run Anywhere”).

2. What are the main features of Java?

Answer:
Some important features of Java are:

  • Object-Oriented: Everything in Java is based on objects and classes.

  • Platform Independent: Java programs can run on any device that has the Java Virtual Machine (JVM).

  • Simple and Secure: Java is easy to learn and has strong security features.

  • Multithreaded: Java supports running multiple tasks at the same time.

  • Robust: It handles errors and exceptions smoothly to avoid crashes.

3. What is the difference between JDK, JRE, and JVM?

Answer:

  • JDK (Java Development Kit): It is a complete package to develop Java programs. It contains tools like compilers and debuggers.

  • JRE (Java Runtime Environment): It is used to run Java programs. It contains JVM and libraries.

  • JVM (Java Virtual Machine): It runs the compiled Java bytecode and converts it to machine language.

4. What are classes and objects in Java?

Answer:
A class is like a blueprint. It defines how something should behave. For example, a class Car can have properties like color, speed, and methods like start() or stop().

An object is a real-world thing created from a class. If the class is Car, then an object could be myCar, which is red and can go at 100km/h.

5. What is inheritance in Java?

Answer:
Inheritance means one class can use the features of another class. For example, if we have a class Animal, we can create a class Dog that inherits from Animal. The Dog class can use the methods and variables of Animal, and also have its own.

6. Explain the concept of constructors.

Answer:
A constructor is a special method that is called when an object is created. It has the same name as the class. It is used to initialize values.

Example:

java
public class Car {
Car() {
System.out.println("Car is created");
}
}

When we create Car myCar = new Car();, the constructor will run and print the message.

7. What is the difference between “==” and “.equals()”?

Answer:

  • == checks if two variables point to the same memory location.

  • .equals() checks if the values are the same.

Example:

java
String a = new String("Hello");
String b = new String("Hello");

System.out.println(a == b); // false (different memory)
System.out.println(a.equals(b)); // true (same value)

8. What is the purpose of the “final” keyword in Java?

Answer:
The final keyword is used to prevent changes.

  • A final variable cannot be changed.

  • A final method cannot be overridden.

  • A final class cannot be inherited.

9. What is the Spring Framework?

Answer:
Spring is a popular Java framework used to build web and enterprise applications. It helps manage the components of a large application easily. It has features like dependency injection, which helps reduce the complexity of code.

10. What is the difference between ArrayList and LinkedList?

Answer:

  • ArrayList: Stores elements in a dynamic array. It is good for accessing elements quickly.

  • LinkedList: Stores elements as a chain of nodes. It is better for adding or removing items in the middle of the list.

11. What is exception handling in Java?

Answer:
Exception handling is used to manage errors in a program without stopping it. Java uses try-catch blocks to handle exceptions. This way, we can fix issues like dividing by zero, or file not found, without crashing the app.

Example:

java
try {
int result = 10 / 0;
} catch (ArithmeticException e) {
System.out.println("Cannot divide by zero");
}

12. What tools do you use for Java development?

Answer:
Some common tools are:

  • Eclipse or IntelliJ IDEA: IDEs used for writing and testing code.

  • Maven or Gradle: Tools for managing projects and libraries.

  • Git: For version control.

  • JIRA: For managing tasks in a project.

13. Have you worked with databases in Java?

Answer:
Yes, in Java we use JDBC (Java Database Connectivity) to connect to databases. We can write SQL queries in Java to insert, update, delete, or fetch data from the database. Some frameworks like Spring also help in connecting to databases more easily.

14. What is the use of ‘this’ keyword in Java?

Answer:
The this keyword refers to the current object. It is used when local variables and class variables have the same name.

Example:

java
public class Student {
int age;

Student(int age) {
this.age = age;
}
}

15. Why should we hire you for this Java Developer role?

Answer:
I am a passionate learner who understands Java and its core principles well. I can write clean and readable code, and I enjoy solving problems using logic. I am familiar with frameworks like Spring and can also work with front-end technologies. I am a good team player and always try to complete tasks on time.
