Basic Interview Questions and Answers

1. What does a Data Solutions Analyst do?

Answer:
A Data Solutions Analyst turns large amounts of raw data into useful information. This helps the company make smart decisions. They create reports, dashboards, and visuals using tools like Tableau and SQL. They also work closely with different teams to understand what kind of data they need, and then build solutions to provide that data in a clear and meaningful way.

2. What are Tableau and SQL used for in this job?

Answer:

  • Tableau is used to create interactive dashboards and charts. It helps show data in a way that’s easy to understand.

  • SQL (Structured Query Language) is used to pull data from databases. It lets you ask questions like “How many customers used our service this month?” or “Which product made the most sales?”

Together, these tools help analysts gather and present data to support business decisions.

3. Why do you want to work at Barclays as a Data Solutions Analyst?

Answer:
Barclays is a well-known global bank that values innovation and digital transformation. This role is exciting because it involves working with the latest data tools and directly contributing to better customer and business outcomes. I also appreciate the focus on collaboration, learning, and growth within the company.

Intermediate Interview Questions and Answers

4. How would you explain a dashboard to someone who doesn’t understand data?

Answer:
A dashboard is like a car dashboard. Just like your car shows you speed, fuel level, and engine alerts, a data dashboard shows important business information. For example, it can show how many new customers joined, which services are performing well, or where improvements are needed—all in one screen using charts and visuals.

5. What steps do you follow to build a report for stakeholders?

Answer:

  1. Understand the request – Talk to the person requesting the report to understand what they need.

  2. Collect the data – Use SQL to gather the right data from the database.

  3. Clean the data – Remove errors, duplicates, or missing values.

  4. Build the report – Use Tableau to create visuals and dashboards.

  5. Test and review – Double-check the results and share with the stakeholder for feedback.

  6. Make updates and deliver – Finalize and deliver the report in the format they need.

6. Can you describe a situation where you had to solve a problem using data?

Answer:
Sure. At my previous job, our sales were going down, but we didn’t know why. I used SQL to pull customer data and Tableau to create a dashboard. I found that a specific region had a sudden drop in orders. After digging deeper, we discovered that a local distributor had stopped selling our product. This insight helped the sales team fix the problem quickly.

Advanced Interview Questions and Answers

7. How do you ensure data accuracy in your reports?

Answer:

  • I start by validating data sources, making sure the raw data is coming from the correct place.

  • Then, I use data cleansing techniques—removing duplicates, fixing wrong entries, and handling missing data.

  • I always cross-check results using multiple methods or with past data to catch any issues.

  • Before delivering, I often do a peer review or stakeholder review to make sure the report meets expectations.

8. How would you explain a complex SQL query to a non-technical stakeholder?

Answer:
I would avoid technical terms and focus on what the query is doing. For example, instead of saying “This query joins two tables and uses a WHERE clause,” I’d say:

“This report looks at two different sets of data—one about customer orders and another about payment details. We matched them by customer ID to see who made purchases but hasn’t paid yet.”

9. What’s your experience working with stakeholders?

Answer:
Working with stakeholders is one of the most important parts of the job. I make sure to:

  • Listen carefully to what they need.

  • Clarify any unclear points by asking questions.

  • Keep them updated as I work on the project.

  • Present results clearly, using visuals and simple explanations.

  • Take feedback seriously and improve the solution based on their input.

This helps build trust and ensures that the final product meets their needs.

10. What would you do if you found a mistake in your report after sharing it?

Answer:
I would take responsibility right away:

  1. Inform the stakeholders that there was a mistake.

  2. Fix the issue quickly, checking all the data again.

  3. Share the corrected version and explain what went wrong and what I did to fix it.

  4. Update the process to avoid similar mistakes in the future.

It’s important to be honest and proactive when something goes wrong.

Bonus: Behavioral Questions (for Leadership or Growth Potential)

11. Have you ever led a team or mentored someone?

Answer:
Yes. In my previous role, I helped train a junior analyst who was new to SQL. I guided them through daily tasks, shared learning resources, and reviewed their work. Over time, they became confident and started handling reports independently. It was rewarding to see their growth.

12. Tell us about a time when you managed a challenging deadline.

Answer:
Once, a senior manager needed a report urgently for a regulatory review. I only had two days to gather, clean, and present the data. I prioritized tasks, stayed focused, and asked for help from a teammate. We delivered the report on time and received positive feedback for our clear and accurate work.
