EY Analyst – Forensics Interview Questions and Answers
1. What is data science and how is it used in forensics?
Answer:
Data science is the process of analyzing large amounts of data to find patterns, insights, or fraud. In forensics, it helps investigate financial crimes, detect unusual activities, and find evidence from digital data.
2. How would you use Python in forensic data analysis?
Answer:
Python is used to clean, organize, and analyze large datasets. In forensic analysis, I can use Python libraries like Pandas, NumPy, and Matplotlib to check for fraud patterns, analyze emails, or study financial transactions.
3. What is your understanding of digital forensics?
Answer:
Digital forensics is the process of collecting, preserving, and analyzing digital data to be used as evidence in legal cases. It includes analyzing files, emails, and online activities to detect crimes or fraud.
4. Can you name some Python libraries used in forensic or data science projects?
Answer:
Yes, some important libraries are:
Pandas – for data manipulation
NumPy – for numerical operations
Matplotlib / Seaborn – for data visualization
Scikit-learn – for machine learning
OpenCV – for image/video analysis
Regex (re) – for pattern matching in text and emails
5. Have you worked on any projects involving data analysis or fraud detection?
Answer:
(If yes) – Yes, I worked on a project where I analyzed financial transactions using Python to detect fake entries based on patterns.
(If no) – I haven’t worked on a live project yet, but I have done practice projects like customer behavior analysis and detecting unusual patterns in datasets.
6. How do you handle missing or incorrect data in a dataset?
Answer:
I first check the amount and reason for missing data. Then I decide to either remove rows with too much missing data or fill them using methods like average, median, or a default value using Python’s fillna()
or dropna()
.
7. What is a forensic audit and how is it different from a regular audit?
Answer:
A forensic audit focuses on investigating fraud or illegal financial activities. A regular audit checks if financial statements are correct. Forensic audits look deeper into suspicious records and collect legal evidence.
8. Explain a situation where you had to solve a complex problem.
Answer:
(Example) – During a college project, I had to analyze unstructured text data. It was challenging, but I used regular expressions and Python’s NLP tools to clean and organize the data, which helped me find useful patterns.
9. What steps would you take if you suspected a data breach?
Answer:
I would follow these steps:
Inform the responsible team or manager
Secure the data and system
Analyze logs to find the source
Collect evidence properly
Help with legal and technical investigation
10. Why do you want to work in forensic analytics at EY?
Answer:
I am interested in combining data analysis with problem-solving to detect fraud and help clients. EY is a leader in forensic services, and I admire how the company uses technology and values growth, learning, and ethics.
